Free Heading Structure Checker
See the H1–H6 outline of any page as search engines and AI crawlers read it — before JavaScript runs — with skipped levels, empty headings and H1 problems flagged.
What a good outline looks like
One H1 that names the page topic. H2s for the main sections, H3s for subsections inside them, and no jumps from H2 straight to H4. Each heading should make sense on its own, because it often gets read out of context — in a table of contents, a search snippet, or a retrieved chunk.
The analyzer reads headings from the server HTML with scripts removed, indents them by level and marks any heading that skips a level relative to the one before it.
Why headings matter more for AI search
Retrieval systems split pages into passages, and headings are the natural split points. A passage under "How much does X cost?" followed by a direct answer can be matched to that exact question and quoted. A passage under "Our approach" can't.
That's why the analyzer counts question-style headings. You don't need every H2 to be a question, but the sections that answer common buyer questions should say so. The query fan-out tool is a quick source of phrasing.
Common problems
- No H1 — often the logo or hero text is styled large but marked up as a div.
- Several H1s — themes that wrap the site name, sidebar titles or cards in H1.
- Skipped levels — headings chosen for font size rather than structure. Style with CSS instead.
- Empty headings — icon-only headings or leftover template markup.
- No headings at all — usually content rendered client-side; confirm with the AI crawler view.
FAQ
Questions
Is more than one H1 bad for SEO?+
HTML allows it and Google has said multiple H1s aren't a problem in themselves. One clear H1 is still the simplest way to state the page topic, for people using screen readers as much as for machines.
Do heading keywords affect rankings?+
Headings help search engines understand what each section covers, which matters more than exact keywords. Write headings that describe the section accurately in the words your readers use.
Why are some headings missing compared with my browser?+
The analyzer reads the HTML your server sends. Headings added by JavaScript after the page loads aren't included — and many AI crawlers don't see them either.
