Free Redirect Chain Checker

Follow a URL hop by hop and see each status code, destination and response time — as Chrome or as GPTBot. Loops, temporary redirects and long chains are flagged with the fix.

What the checker does

AI crawlers vs. robots.txt and JavaScript · illustrative

It requests the URL without following redirects automatically, reads the Location header, and repeats for up to ten hops. Each hop shows the status code, where it points, whether the protocol or host changed and how long it took. The chain ends at the first response that isn't a redirect.

Switch the user-agent to GPTBot to see whether AI crawlers are sent somewhere different — some sites redirect bots to a consent page, a country selector or a block page.

301, 302, 307, 308: which to use

  • 301 Moved Permanently — the default for permanent moves. Search engines move signals to the new URL.
  • 308 Permanent Redirect — also permanent, and keeps the request method (useful for POST endpoints).
  • 302 Found / 307 Temporary Redirect — for moves you plan to undo. Used for a permanent move, they can keep the old URL in the index longer.
  • 303 See Other — for redirecting after a form submission; not for page moves.

Why chain length matters

Each hop adds a round trip for visitors and a request for crawlers. Google follows up to ten hops, but recommends pointing redirects straight at the final URL. Typical chains come from stacking rules: http→https, then non-www→www, then an old slug→new slug. Combine them into one rule per source URL. After a migration, also make sure your sitemap lists final URLs only — the sitemap analyzer flags mixed hosts and protocols.

FAQ

Questions

Do redirects lose link equity?+

Google has said 3xx redirects don't lose PageRank. The practical costs of long chains are slower pages, wasted crawl requests and the risk that one hop breaks.

How many redirects are too many?+

One is ideal. Two is common after migrations and worth cleaning up. More than that should be collapsed into a single hop; beyond ten, Google stops following.

Why do I see a different result in my browser?+

Browsers cache 301s, and some sites redirect based on location, language, cookies or user-agent. This tool sends a fresh request each time with no cookies.
